Sustainable Development

Environment and Nature

Bayer places an equal emphasis on commercial success and environmentally friendly processes - making products that are safe and gentle on natural resources. However, our responsibility to the environment goes beyond ensuring our own processes and products are safe – we also encourage environmental responsibility on a wider scale by supporting environmental education initiatives.  » more

Sustainability

In the debate about progress in society as a whole, the concept of sustainability plays a central role. The basis of sustainable development is to keep a balance between economic, ecological and social considerations. For Bayer, this entails in specific terms a commitment to safeguard the long-term commercial success of the company through innovative products, conserve resources, treat the environment responsibly and make a global contribution to maintaining a humane society.

For this reason, we have developed special management structures and strategies, set ourselves objectives against which we allow ourselves to be judged and endeavor to report transparently. In our annual Sustainable Development Report we inform, for example, on how we put into practice our commitment to the ten principles of the Global Compact. In so doing, we align ourselves to the guidelines of the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) and the OECD.

In addition, we pursue dialogue with our stakeholders, i.e. Bayer engages in a continuous and intensive exchange of views with the interest groups of the company: stockholders, business partners, staff, the media, non-governmental organizations, suppliers and authorities.

Whangarei Native Bird Recovery Centre

Bayer New Zealand is a major sponsor of The Native Bird Recovery Centre in Whangarei, New Zealand. The centre provides a facility to care for and protect New Zealand’s very special native birdlife.

The centre takes in injured birds and nurses them back to health for release back into the wild. Nearly 60% of endemic and native birds brought to the centre are successfully released again. The centre also has a number of incubators purchased with funds raised by local community groups to incubate eggs, and is very proud of its 98% hatching success with kiwi eggs.

The number of birds being brought into the centre has doubled every year since it opened in l994. It is now handling close to l300 birds a year, including kiwi, wood pigeons, moreporks, harrier hawks, albatrosses and a wide range of common birds.

Staff are all volunteer workers who give their time to help ensure New Zealand’s remaining native bird species survive. The centre relies entirely on sponsors such as Bayer, donations and gifts to meet its running costs, and feed the birds.

Bayer's Climate Change Commitment

The impact of climate change on people’s living conditions is substantial and poses challenges for all societal groups. Bayer has now raised its climate protection targets and is thus continuing its ambitious approach.

In keeping with the principles of sustainable development, we strive to balance economic, ecological and social benefits with each other through our activities. Bayer also wants to meet its responsibilities in matters of climate change. We take climate change as an environmental and economic challenge seriously. It affects the foundations of our commercial activity. On the one hand, endeavors in the field of environmental protection have to be strengthened. On the other, greater attention needs to be paid to innovative solutions to deal with the consequences of climate change. Bayer intends to make specific contributions to both.
