Celebrating Women in Science: Inspiring Stories from Bayer ANZ

To celebrate International Day of Women and Girls in Science 2025, we partnered with The Hon Paul Fletcher MP for an inspiring event at Willoughby Girls High School in Sydney.

Encouraging girls to pursue STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) is crucial for a diverse and inclusive scientific community.


We explored how innovative ideas shape our world and celebrated the contributions of women in science, including the stories of three remarkable women from Bayer ANZ: Alexandra, Duthika, and Nancy.


These pioneering women shared their challenges and triumphs in advancing science and technology. They are at the forefront of science, making discoveries that change lives. They work at the crossroads of technology and health, ensuring medical and scientific interventions are safe.


They also combine technology and art to communicate science with a range of audiences.

Alexandra: Advocating for Agricultural Innovation 
 

The focus of Alexandra Bunton is one of dedication to the future of agriculture.


She joined Bayer in 2021 and is currently Senior Manager – Public Affairs for Bayer’s crop science business in ANZ, managing the company’s high-level relationships with government and stakeholders.


With a rich background in agricultural policy and a clear vision for the potential of innovative farming technologies, Alexandra's work is pivotal in ensuring that farmers have access to the tools they need to succeed.  


After completing a Bachelor of Arts in Environmental Studies, she found a practical application for her sustainability knowledge by working in the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry. This sparked a love of working with the farm sector and creating positive change for farmers and the environment.  


Her story underscores the importance of combining both scientific and communications expertise to drive sustainable practices and secure food sources for future generations.
 


Duthika Mallawaaratchy: Bridging Science and Patient Care
 

Duthika's journey into the world of science began in high school, where she developed a fascination for biology and chemistry. She completed her PhD in cancer proteomics at the University of Sydney and is now a Medical Advisor and Senior Medical Science Liaison in the Oncology team at Bayer.


Duthika collaborates with healthcare professionals and researchers to ensure that the latest scientific advancements are effectively communicated and implemented in patient care. Her story highlights the importance of bridging scientific research and practical application to improve patient outcomes.
 


Nancy Azzi: Innovating Radiology and Informatics


Nancy's extensive experience in radiology and informatics has made her a key player in the field. With over thirteen years as a full-time Medical Radiation Scientist (Radiographer) in the public health system, she has also taken on roles as a Clinical Analyst and Clinical Consultant for radiology informatics digital solutions.


Nancy's expertise spans x-ray (general, trauma, and dental), fluoroscopy, theatre radiography, Computed Tomography (CT), Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), capital products, contrast media, clinical consulting, workflow analysis, and product training delivery. Her story showcases the integration of technology and healthcare to enhance diagnostic and treatment processes.
